Marin of Koholint by akuriko Marin of Koholint by akuriko
I LOVE THIS COSTUME. It's so comfortable! XD I wanted to take a moment to talk about everything that went into this costume. :3 First the wig is my first time doing a lacefront from scratch. 30 hours later, I had a much more natural looking hairline than what the wig had started with. The dress is 100% Japanese sandwashed rayon (re: THE BEST FABRIC IN EXISTENCE LOL). It's so soft and drapes beautifully. X3 I had to strip the color of this fabric, and redye it, but it was so so so worth it in the end. All the trouble I went through for this dress was worth it. XD;

When deciding on the method of making the trim, I was a bit baffled. I know, lolsimplecostume, but I really wanted the method to reflect Marin's background and personality. I felt that she wouldn't wear anything with applique or fancy embroidery, nor would simply painting the designs on suffice. So I ended up coming up with my own method of resist dyeing with diluted textile paints. All in all, I really like how it came out, and I feel it really suits Marin. The shoes are 100% leather, save for the sole which I stole from some flipflops, and the flower in my hair I purchased from a bouquet company online, cut it from its stem, and stuck a pin on it lol. The pendant stone is cast from epoxy resin (mold and model made from scratch by me), and the stone setting is made from pluffy (ultra lightweight polymer clay).

I had started building her harp, but it's still in progress. My plan is to make it fully functional (I actually play the harp, but since I moved to Milwaukee, I no longer have access to one to practice on, so I figure making this a real harp will help me recover any technique I've lost). It's going to have 22 strings, slanted to follow the shape of a real harp's sound curve. I just have to wait until I have enough money before I can purchase real harp strings and pins. So excited though. I'm just scared to death to work on it sometimes. XD;;;

Lol every costume is a new adventure. XD

The way the designs on the sleeves and skirt came out are impeccable. What kind of process did you undertake to get it to look so perfect? You mentioned textile paint but I have no idea how that equals what I'm looking at on you in this photo, ha. It definitely looks far better than appliques end up looking.

Your wig is also amazing of course, I mean, 30 hours of lacing your own wig by hand will do that. :P

Thank you. ^ ^ It was a process I came up with myself. Basically, I cut the designs out of contact paper, stuck the contact paper to the fabric, and spritzed the diluted paint over the fabric with a spray bottle, and quickly blotted it up with a sponge brush. After it was dry, I pulled the contact paper off, and heat sealed the paint with an iron. Applique has a completely different look, but it by no means looks bad (I've used it for my Zelda tabards). I just felt it wasn't suitable for Marin is all. Thanks again. ^ ^

Wow! You know me, I love hearing about your process. It is really cool to see the great attention to details.

And the hair color is just too much fun! That is awesome that you took the time to do a lacefront wig. XD

Thanks! :3 I think I'm going to start talking more about my processes more often. Hehe I know! While I was working on the lace front, my dress was on my dressform which was visible to me in my peripheral vision, so whenever I'd see the two together I'd be like "OMG it's Marin!! ~(T^T)~" Lol XD;

OMG! You are such an amazing Marin! Your costume is perfect down to the details! I don't think I've seen a better Marin. But what I really like is that your dress looks authentic. The fabrics and the details on it really do look like the clothes of a real island girl. I especially love your wig. It nice yet slightly messy just like hers. You just pull her off really well.
You made my Links Awakening fandom very happy.
